Obasanjo Mourns the Loss of Political Titan Bamanga Tukur: A Legacy of Service

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), calling him a patriot whose life embodied dedication and public service.

In a heartfelt tribute, Obasanjo praised Tukur for his unwavering commitment to Nigeria, highlighting his significant contributions across governance, international business, and political leadership.

Tukur passed away on September 12, 2026, at the age of 91. Obasanjo recalled their long-standing association, noting Tukur’s transformative roles, including his leadership at the Nigerian Ports Authority and as a former civilian Governor of Gongola State.

Describing Tukur as an "institutional pillar," Obasanjo emphasized his love for the nation and his efforts toward economic independence and pan-African integration.

The family of Tukur, while mourning their “beloved father and patriarch,” thanked the public for their condolences and support. They announced that details regarding his funeral arrangements would be shared soon.

Tukur's legacy includes his tenure as PDP chairman during a tumultuous time for the party, as he navigated internal crises and strived for unity. His passing is seen as a monumental loss for Nigeria and its political landscape.
