NNPP National Secretary-General Ogini Olaposi cautioned that Kwankwaso’s history of conflict with the party, particularly after the 2023 presidential election, should serve as a red flag for the NDC. He characterized the choice of Kwankwaso as Peter Obi’s running mate as a “gross mistake.”
"Political parties must be cautious in their selection of candidates," Olaposi stated, highlighting Kwankwaso's previous actions that led to a schism within the NNPP. He pointed out that Kwankwaso had previously turned his back on the very party that elevated him politically.
Olaposi alleged that Kwankwaso's departure contributed to internal strife within the NNPP, resulting in significant member attrition. "Once a betrayer, always a betrayer," he asserted, predicting that Kwankwaso would act similarly towards the NDC.
He also refuted claims that Kwankwaso was handed control of the NNPP, emphasizing that such assertions are unfounded. "It’s preposterous to say we gave away what belongs to the Board of Trustees without due process," he declared.
Addressing Obi's potential as a candidate, Olaposi noted that his popularity alone would not guarantee electoral success. He urged that voters will closely examine the political history of the running mate, as the vice-president could ascend to presidency if necessary.
Olaposi dismissed large rally turnouts as misleading indicators of electoral strength. "Rallies can easily be filled with rented crowds, which don’t translate to votes," he cautioned.
He urged NDC founder Seriake Dickson to remain vigilant in safeguarding the party's structure from potential disruptions caused by Kwankwaso’s presence.
In closing, Olaposi appealed to former NNPP members to rejoin the party ahead of the 2027 elections, signaling a call for unity and strength as the political landscape shifts.
