The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, announced this significant development in a statement on Sunday, confirming that she accompanied Koroma back to Sierra Leone on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.
Koroma's return marks the culmination of a regional diplomatic effort involving the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and various stakeholders aimed at fostering peace and political understanding in Sierra Leone.
The minister noted that Koroma relocated to Nigeria in January 2024 as part of ECOWAS's initiatives designed to promote stability in the region.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu praised Koroma's conduct during his time in Nigeria, highlighting his restraint and commitment to peaceful resolutions.
“His actions reflected statesmanship, paving the way for improved relations between him and current President Julius Maada Bio,” she said.
The sustained diplomatic engagements throughout Koroma’s stay contributed to resolving the issues that necessitated his relocation, the minister added.
She expressed gratitude to both Bio and Koroma for their cooperation, emphasizing Nigeria’s dedication to regional harmony and constitutional order.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed optimism that Koroma’s return would further enhance national reconciliation efforts in Sierra Leone.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also joined the minister in escorting Koroma back, underscoring the importance of the occasion.
This development highlights Nigeria's ongoing commitment to stability and peace in West Africa, showcasing its role as a mediator in regional conflicts.
As Koroma embarks on this new chapter, both nations look forward to improved relations and continued collaboration for peace.
