Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Information for the Nigerian Navy, announced the arrests, which took place on September 8, 2026. The operation was initiated based on credible intelligence regarding the movement of illicit drugs in the area.
The suspects were apprehended aboard a large wooden commercial boat near the Chintako Community Jetty in Bassa Local Government Area, where the cannabis was cleverly concealed in the rear compartment.
Following their arrest, the suspects and the seized drugs were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kogi State Command on September 9 for further investigation and prosecution.
NDLEA representatives stated that inquiries would focus on identifying the source and ownership of the cannabis, as well as uncovering those involved in its supply chain.
Captain Folorunsho emphasized that this interception highlights the crucial role of intelligence-led maritime enforcement in combating the trafficking of illicit drugs through Nigeria's inland waterways.
