The video depicted the boy being tied with a rope, stripped naked, and severely flogged, resulting in visible injuries. Reports indicate that he was then left exposed to the sun, raising significant concerns regarding his wellbeing.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, stated that authorities acted swiftly upon receiving alerts about the video. Following directives from Commissioner of Police Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, officers from the Abayi Divisional Police Headquarters apprehended Uwaeme at his residence on Nwokocha Street.
The Commissioner condemned the alleged treatment of the child, calling it “inhumane, barbaric, and a gross violation of the rights of the child.”
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on child abuse and domestic violence. They confirmed that Uwaeme would be prosecuted according to the law.
Chinaka noted that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation, while the suspect remains in custody.
As for the victim, he is currently receiving medical attention and has been reported to be in stable condition.
This incident highlights the urgent need for greater awareness and action against child abuse in Nigeria, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting children.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of safeguarding children's rights and ensuring that such acts of violence are met with appropriate legal consequences.
