The police described images circulating on social media as misleading and generated through artificial intelligence.
The protest, organized by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), aimed to address outstanding pension adjustments and wage awards. Prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called for accountability, demanding the arrest of officers allegedly involved in the incident.
Despite claims of police intervention, the Command's spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, emphasized that no tear gas was utilized during the protest. The police maintained a visible presence to ensure law and order, with operatives from various divisions deployed to oversee the event.
Around 500 pensioners gathered peacefully at Alausa, Ikeja, led by NUP Chairman Comrade Michael Omishade and NLC Chairperson Comrade Agnes Funmi Sesse. The Chief of Staff to the Governor addressed the protesters, leading to a three-hour indoor meeting with pensioner representatives.
Following the meeting, the protesters dispersed peacefully, and the police confirmed that the area remained calm, with no adverse incidents reported.
In a statement titled “NUP Protest: No Tear Gas Fired, Circulating Image is AI-Generated,” the police urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could incite unrest or erode public trust. The Command reiterated its commitment to upholding citizens' rights to peaceful assembly and expression.
As tensions rise over pension disputes, pensioners are expected to meet with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu later this week, seeking resolution to their demands.
