Under the theme “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows,” Dada pointed out that widowhood extends beyond the loss of a spouse, often leading to financial hardship and emotional distress. She asserted the need for comprehensive support that includes access to justice and opportunities for economic independence.
“The support for widows must be more than sympathy; it must empower them to sustain their households and improve their livelihoods,” Dada stated. The Ministry has implemented cash grants, vocational training, and business support programs aimed at fostering self-reliance among widows.
Dada also called for a shift in the narrative surrounding widows, encouraging society to recognize their capabilities and contributions rather than defining them by their losses. “Widows should be seen as women of strength and potential who can contribute meaningfully to their families and society,” she stressed.
The commissioner praised collaborative efforts with female-focused NGOs that extend support at the community level and urged journalists to highlight not just the challenges widows face, but also their resilience and achievements.
In a show of commitment, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Rianat Onigbanjo, reiterated that widows deserve opportunities that protect their rights and promote economic independence. She commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritizing programs aimed at empowering women and vulnerable groups.
The Lagos State Government aims to strengthen partnerships with relevant organizations to enhance the welfare and dignity of widows through ongoing empowerment programs. Dada concluded by encouraging widows to seize available opportunities, reminding them that their circumstances do not define their future potential.
With these initiatives, the Lagos State Government aims to foster an environment where widows can thrive and contribute positively to their communities.
