Kano Mandates Annual License Renewals for Private Schools

In a significant policy shift, the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board has announced that all private schools in the state must now renew their operating licenses annually. The new requirement was revealed by Executive Secretary Baba Abubakar-Umar during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The annual renewal fee for these licenses is set at N6,000. Abubakar-Umar emphasized that schools are expected to uphold strict educational standards to ensure quality education for all students.

As part of the new regulations, schools seeking to establish themselves must submit a formal application followed by a comprehensive inspection of their facilities. The inspection will focus on qualified staff, adequate infrastructure, and adherence to the approved curriculum.

“We examine everything from benches to safety measures, ensuring that the welfare of the children is prioritized,” Abubakar-Umar explained. He noted that previous regulations allowed for triennial renewals, but recent legal amendments have shifted this to an annual requirement under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.

Proprietors with expired permits are urged to complete the renewal process by the end of the month, as failure to do so will result in immediate sanctions. The executive secretary also warned against arbitrary fee increases, stating that any adjustments must be justified and communicated through an active Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

“You cannot just raise fees every term without valid reasons,” he cautioned, highlighting the need for schools to consider parents' economic realities.
