JAMB Takes Over HND Admissions in Nigerian Polytechnics

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has officially announced that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will now oversee all Higher National Diploma (HND) admissions in polytechnics, colleges of nursing sciences, and health technology institutions across Nigeria.

This pivotal decision was detailed in a circular dated September 9, 2026, signed by NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, and circulated to rectors and provosts of the affected institutions. The move aims to centralize the admissions process and eliminate illegal practices that compromise the integrity of the system.

In a meeting with key stakeholders, including the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, it was determined that a centralized approach would enhance transparency and ensure proper mobilization of students for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after completing their HND programs.

“The aim is to provide a streamlined process and prevent compromised admissions,” Bugaje explained, emphasizing that all institutions must adhere strictly to this directive to avoid regulatory sanctions.

JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, affirmed the board’s commitment to comply with the new guidelines, stating, “It’s a directive from above, and we are here to ensure the government’s vision is realized.”

Under the new system, part-time ND admissions will also fall under JAMB’s purview, with a cap set at 50% of each institution’s full-time quota. Additionally, NCE holders will now be required to gain admission into HND programs through JAMB, having first obtained a valid ND.

The NBTE circular further warned that any violations would result in significant penalties, including potential withdrawal of operational licenses for non-compliant institutions.

The integration of this new system is expected to foster adherence to accredited programs and established carrying capacities, effectively eliminating illegal admissions. The minister is also set to review exemptions for certain ND agriculture-related programs in terms of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination requirements.

The NBTE is tasked with developing HND admission guidelines to assist JAMB’s digital platform, ensuring a robust framework for the new process.
