Williams, who scored two goals for Ghana, represented the nation at two FIFA World Cups, participating in both the 2022 and 2026 tournaments. He was also part of the squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ghana was eliminated in the group stage.
Originally a Spanish international, Williams made his sole appearance for Spain in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016. He received his first call-up to the Ghana national team in September 2022 from then-coach Otto Addo for pre-World Cup friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Williams expressed pride in his journey with the Black Stars. “I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end,” he stated.
He reflected on his experiences, saying, “Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots, and experience the enormous pride of representing my country.”
Williams extended gratitude to everyone who supported him during his international career: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love you have shown me.”
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Black Stars, stating, “Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am.”
Following his retirement from international duties, Williams will now focus solely on his club career with Athletic Club. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in his football journey, as he cherishes the memories created while wearing the national jersey.
