According to NSCDC Commandant Toma Enya, the arrests stemmed from an investigation launched after several electrical cables went missing from a secure location. The cables had been temporarily removed in November 2025 due to road construction, following an agreement between the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and community leaders.
"After the cables were stored for safekeeping, they began to disappear," Enya explained. "Our investigation led us to the suspects, who allegedly removed the cables bit by bit and sold them to a metal scrap dealer known as 'Bollar,' who is currently at large."
The suspects reportedly confessed to selling the stolen cables to Bollar on two occasions, netting a total of ₦150,000.
During questioning, Olunlade admitted to the crime and pleaded for leniency. "I am a farmer, and my son and a nephew were living with me. I suggested the idea to them, and they agreed," he stated. "We sold the cables three times, each time for ₦50,000, which we shared equally. I promise not to do it again."
Enya emphasized that efforts to apprehend the elusive Bollar will continue and that the suspects will face charges once the investigation concludes.
The case highlights ongoing issues of vandalism and theft of critical national infrastructure in Nigeria, prompting the NSCDC to intensify its efforts in protecting such assets.
In related news, the Osun State Police Command recently arrested six suspects involved in the vandalization and theft of a high-tension powerline pole in Ikirun, further underlining the urgency of tackling these crimes in the region.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain committed to ensuring that justice is served and that those involved in sabotaging government infrastructure are held accountable.
