Embracing Technology: CDS Urges Military to Leverage AI and Surveillance for Enhanced Security

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to adopt emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced surveillance systems to bolster security operations. 

During a recent inauguration in Kaduna, which included the opening of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Command Centre, Oluyede emphasized the need for the military to adapt to evolving security challenges through technological innovation.

The newly inaugurated command centre is part of a series of projects aimed at enhancing the academy's infrastructure, which also includes an expanded RSM Oliver Nzalgana Parade Ground and a new 500-capacity Ashanti Battalion Cadets’ Mess.

Oluyede highlighted that contemporary security threats require the military to leverage technology for improved situational awareness and quicker response times. He stated, "The development of professional armed forces necessitates sustained attention to training, welfare, and technological innovation."

The CDS reiterated that ignoring technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence and surveillance, would hinder the military's ability to protect personnel and national infrastructure.

He commended the NDA's leadership for their efforts in improving training and welfare through these infrastructural advancements, which signify a commitment to excellence.

Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, the NDA Commandant, noted that the command centre is equipped with AI-enabled surveillance technology, enhancing the academy's security architecture. This facility aims to strengthen the safety of cadets and critical infrastructure.

Olatoye described the renovations and new constructions as investments in the academy's mission to provide a cutting-edge military education and training environment.

He urged the management to ensure responsible utilization and maintenance of the new facilities, stressing the importance of accountability in their management.

The CDS expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support in developing the Armed Forces and acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders involved in the project completion.

As the military faces increasing challenges, Oluyede's call to embrace technology reflects a strategic shift towards modernizing Nigeria's defense capabilities to effectively address contemporary security threats.
