Vice President Shettima Champions Reforms to Boost Police Training and Welfare

The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions nationwide, with work expected to commence immediately and conclude within three weeks.

Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the initiative during the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council in Abuja, highlighting the importance of enhancing the training capacity of the Nigerian Police Force.

Shettima urged the council to sustain ongoing reforms until tangible economic improvements translate into job creation, increased purchasing power, and better living conditions for Nigerians.

“The rehabilitation of these institutions is crucial for preparing them for the resumption of training programs,” he stated, emphasizing that effective training is essential for a competent police force.

In addition to the rehabilitation contracts, Shettima approved the Revised National Social Protection Policy (NSPP: 2026 – 2030), presented by Senator Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning.

The NSPP aims to strengthen social protection coordination and implementation across Nigeria. It proposes the establishment of a National Social Protection Council to oversee these efforts.

Shettima called on state governments to align their policies, laws, budgets, and implementation plans with the revised national framework.

He underscored the importance of continuity in governance, stressing that a government's effectiveness is judged by its commitment to unresolved issues. “Continuity is a form of accountability,” he remarked.

The Vice President reiterated the need for macroeconomic progress to convert into visible benefits for citizens, thereby enhancing business confidence and fostering stronger local economies.

“Yesterday’s promises deserve a place at today’s table. No new priority should absolve us of our old responsibilities,” Shettima added, reinforcing the government's commitment to making impactful changes.

As the Federal Government embarks on these initiatives, the focus remains on improving the welfare and effectiveness of the Nigerian Police, aiming to create a safer and more secure environment for all citizens.
