Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU, Tinubu expressed Nigeria's deep concern over these recurring incidents, which he believes undermine peaceful coexistence across the continent.
“Nigeria acknowledges South Africa’s sovereign right to enforce immigration laws, but such attacks against other nationals cannot be overlooked,” Tinubu stated, calling for the issue to be placed on the agenda for the upcoming 40th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in January 2027.
The President urged African leaders to reaffirm their commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of all African nationals, advocating for a stronger continental response to combat xenophobia and Afrophobia.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of dialogue and preventive diplomacy, stressing that proactive measures are more effective than reactive ones. He endorsed the adoption of the Luanda Action Plan as a roadmap for conflict prevention across the continent.
The Nigerian leader also raised concerns about fragmented peace initiatives and external interferences, warning that reliance on foreign military forces could weaken the AU’s conflict prevention mechanisms.
He called on arms-producing nations to collaborate with African states to prevent the diversion of weapons to terrorists and non-state actors. “Limited trust and inconsistent implementation continue to undermine our conflict resolution efforts,” he noted.
Tinubu advocated for sustainable funding for AU peace operations and emphasized the need for member states to take collective responsibility for Africa's security. He urged a recommitment to home-grown solutions and stronger cooperation among African nations.
As the summit continues, Tinubu’s call for action reflects a growing urgency to address the challenges of xenophobia and promote solidarity within the African community. “Let us renew our commitment to solidarity and cooperation as we build the Africa we want,” he concluded.
