A tragic incident unfolded in Benue State as a police officer was killed during an attack by suspected armed herders on a joint police and military checkpoint in the Uzer community of Logo Local Government Area (LGA).

The attack occurred when the assailants stormed the security checkpoint, prompting a swift response from troops of Sector 1, Operation Whirl Stroke, stationed in nearby Ayilamo, along with a team of mobile policemen.

Witnesses reported that upon seeing the advancing security forces, the attackers fled into the surrounding bushes.

A local source confirmed that the security personnel conducted a follow-up operation to track the fleeing assailants and restore order to the area.

During this operation, they discovered the body of a Police Inspector, who had succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.

The remains of the fallen officer were taken to the mortuary at Ayilamo Hospital for autopsy and further procedures.

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the loss of the officer, stating, “I can confirm that we lost one of our officers in Ayilamo. Operations in that area are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.”

In the wake of the attack, security forces have ramped up patrols and surveillance around Uzer, Ayilamo, and other bordering communities within Logo LGA.

This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges faced in the region, as authorities strive to mitigate violence and ensure the safety of local residents.

As investigations continue, the community remains on high alert, hoping for swift justice and a return to peace.
