Ogun PDP Deputy Gov Candidate Calls for Muslim Women's Unity to Combat Social Vices

The 2027 deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Lateefah Sowunmi-Kolapo, has called on Muslim women to unite across various divides to address rising social vices. Speaking at the inaugural summit of the Egba Muslim Women Forum in Abeokuta, she emphasized the critical role mothers play in society.

Sowunmi-Kolapo highlighted that mothers are the foundation of strong families and urged them to raise children with robust moral values. “We must intentionally nurture our children to resist threats like drug abuse, cybercrime, and cultism,” she asserted.

The summit, themed “Mothers, Unity and Community Service: Nurturing Strong Families, Building Vibrant Communities,” was attended by Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, traditional rulers, and Islamic scholars, showcasing a united front in addressing community concerns.

Describing the forum’s inauguration as a pivotal moment, Sowunmi-Kolapo declared it a movement aimed at empowering women and fostering collaboration among Muslim women in Egbaland. “This is not just another association; it’s a platform for meaningful change,” she stated.

She expressed alarm over the erosion of family values due to economic hardship and the influence of social media. “Today, our homes face challenges that require us to foster integrity and discipline in our children,” she said, urging women to instill values that contribute positively to society.

Sowunmi-Kolapo called for the forum to be a home for all Muslim women, emphasizing the need to replace rivalry with cooperation. “Together, we can strengthen our community and create a safer environment for our families,” she noted.

Deputy Governor Salako-Oyedele praised the initiative, calling it a historic milestone. She stressed that collective action among women would yield greater results than individual efforts. “Unity is our strength,” she affirmed.

The summit also focused on the importance of Muslim women engaging in community development and public policy advocacy. Sowunmi-Kolapo urged participants to champion leadership roles and promote accountability in governance.
