Ogun Government Launches Cleanup Efforts Amid Lead Contamination Crisis

The Ogun State Government has initiated a vital remediation project in the Ogijo area, addressing alarming lead contamination linked to Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling activities. This move aims to protect public health and restore the environment.

Following a thorough environmental assessment by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), which included soil, water, and air testing, the government recognized the serious health risks posed by prolonged exposure to lead, especially for children and pregnant women.

Kehinde Bello, General Manager of OGEPA, announced the flag-off of the cleanup, emphasizing the urgency of eliminating lead contamination sources. The state has begun evacuating hazardous slag illegally dumped across Ogijo, a task expected to take several weeks due to the extensive nature of the contamination.

“The evacuation is crucial for the public interest and well-being of residents,” Bello stated, assuring that measures are in place to prevent future illegal dumping.

Additionally, the state government has mandated ULAB facilities to upgrade their technology, implementing automatic battery breakers to minimize slag generation and adhere to environmental standards.

Babatunde Lawal, Director of Hazardous Material Management at OGEPA, highlighted that the remediation plan includes not just slag evacuation, but also a bio-remediation process involving planting materials to absorb remaining lead from the soil.

Lawal urged ULAB operators to follow responsible practices in line with environmental regulations, stressing the importance of sustainability in protecting the environment and community health.

Tunde Bolarinwa, Director of Inspectorate and Compliance at OGEPA, warned that any facility failing to comply with the new operational guidelines will face strict penalties, reinforcing the government’s commitment to environmental safety.

With these proactive measures, the Ogun State Government aims to create a safer and healthier environment for the residents of Ogijo, turning a page on the challenges posed by lead contamination. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to enforce environmental standards and ensure responsible industrial practices.
