In a statement, Ahmed argued that the ongoing focus on allegations regarding the President’s certificates underscores the opposition's inability to offer Nigerians compelling alternatives regarding governance. His remarks come in response to a recent legal challenge initiated by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is seeking Tinubu’s disqualification from the upcoming presidential election based on claims related to his NYSC certificate.
"The case remains pending, and the allegations have not been established by a court," Ahmed emphasized, underscoring the need for judicial clarity before further discourse.
While acknowledging the right of political actors to scrutinize public officials, the lawmaker insisted that elections should revolve around substantive visions for the country. "Nigerians deserve a campaign of ideas, not an endless recycling of allegations," he stressed.
Ahmed further questioned the rationale behind revisiting the certificate controversy when pressing issues like the economy, security, and employment demand attention. "There is a difference between legitimate scrutiny and political obsession," he stated.
He also articulated his respect for Atiku’s presidential aspirations but reminded him that political dynamics must be considered, noting that the presidency should remain in the South after eight years of Northern leadership from 2015 to 2023.
"Atiku should know that longevity belongs to God. He could still be President in 2031 if he retraces his steps to the APC," Ahmed added.
Ultimately, the lawmaker asserted that Tinubu should be evaluated based on his record and the direction of his administration, rather than on ongoing allegations. "Nigerians are asking a bigger question: who has the ideas and capacity to move Nigeria forward?" he concluded.
