Adeyemi Samuel Olumode, Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, made this appeal at the One-Day National Stakeholders’ Summit on Fire Safety held in Abuja.
He emphasized the urgent need for strategically located fire stations to enhance emergency response times in communities.
During his address, Adeyemi highlighted successful examples of community-driven initiatives, such as the Offa Descendant Association Fire Station and the Oyo Town Fire Station, showcasing how local investment can significantly bolster public safety.
As he celebrated the one-year anniversary of his tenure, Adeyemi reflected on the achievements of the Federal Fire Service, including the rehabilitation of 40 firefighting appliances and the training of over 700 cadet officers. These efforts aim to improve the country's firefighting capabilities.
The summit also marked a historic moment as 37 Public Relations Officers from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were inducted into the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
This initiative aims to professionalize communication within the Federal Fire Service and enhance public engagement.
Adeyemi stressed the importance of effective communication in firefighting, noting that incidents are not just operational but also communicative challenges.
He advocated for strategic communication training to build public trust in the Fire Service.
The Controller General expressed gratitude to partners like the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the Tony Elumelu Foundation for their collaborative efforts in promoting fire safety education and preparedness among 7,740 Nigerians.
He encouraged the public to aid firefighters during emergencies by ensuring clear access for fire appliances and sharing verified information with responders, emphasizing that community involvement is crucial in crisis situations.
