Borno Bishop: Faith and Prayer is the Key to Defeating Boko Haram"

The Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese, Most Rev. Oliver Dashe, has urged Christians to deepen their prayer efforts against Boko Haram, asserting that faith has the power to overcome the insurgency. His remarks came during a church session marking the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Bishop Dashe acknowledged the relative peace the region has experienced after years of conflict but emphasized the need for continuous prayer and active participation from both individuals and the government to achieve lasting victory. "While prayer is vital, we must also take action," he stated.

Describing the day as significant for the Catholic Church, he highlighted the pivotal role of Mother Mary in the lives of the faithful in the diocese. "Her intercession has been instrumental in my time as bishop," Dashe reflected, noting the various devotions practiced by the church, including the rosary and pilgrimages.

He pointed out that the current peace in the state could be attributed to divine intervention, particularly through Mother Mary. "The situation was dire when the Boko Haram crisis began, but now we see hope as displaced people return to worship," he noted.

However, the bishop called on governmental authorities to bolster support for security forces, urging them to confront terrorists in their hideouts. "It is crucial for the government to take decisive action to restore peace across our state and nation," he added.

As he concluded, Bishop Dashe reiterated the importance of prayer for Christians, encouraging vigilance through faith, stating, "We must remain alert and committed to our prayers to support our community and country."
