Abiodun Reveals Warnings Against Backing Daniel for Senate in 2023

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has disclosed that he faced advice against supporting former Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s bid for the Senate in the 2023 elections, citing fears that Daniel might later turn against him. 

During a recent meeting with members of Daniel's political faction and the late Senator Buruji Kashamu's group, Abiodun recounted the political dynamics leading up to the last election. He expressed that despite the warnings, he chose to support Daniel out of respect for his former role as governor.

"I believed that political disagreements shouldn’t diminish the respect we owe to former office holders. I chose to honor him, as I too will one day be a former governor," Abiodun stated.

The governor recalled a moment when Daniel expressed uncertainty about the next gubernatorial candidate, despite one of the contenders belonging to his party. "Now the gloves are off. He is the same person we heard in an audio claiming he had taken someone to court," Abiodun remarked, hinting at underlying tensions.

Abiodun also voiced concerns about Daniel's recent activities, including the relaunch of his foundation, which featured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, as a special guest. This, he argued, indicated Daniel's drift from the APC mainstream.

"I respect OGD as my leader because he was the governor before me. However, our political relationship has always been guided by the respect owed to the office," Abiodun added, reflecting on his own political journey.

He emphasized that political power is a privilege granted by God and should be wielded responsibly. "If you misuse this power, it will be taken away," he warned, underscoring the importance of integrity in leadership.

Abiodun welcomed Daniel’s loyalists back into the APC, urging them to unite for the upcoming elections rather than fragment. "Political actors with common interests should speak with one voice," he insisted.

In response, Daniel’s media aide, Steve Oliyide, refuted claims of a foundation relaunch, clarifying it was merely a reunion to plan for the 25th anniversary of the Gateway Front Foundation. He also expressed disappointment over the portrayal of Adebutu's participation in the event.

The political rift between Abiodun and Daniel seems to be widening, particularly as both eye the Senate seat for Ogun East in the 2027 elections. While Daniel seeks reelection, Abiodun has been positioned as the APC's consensus candidate for the same seat.

With tensions escalating, the political landscape in Ogun State is set for a dramatic showdown in the upcoming elections, as both leaders navigate their ambitions and allegiances.
