Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan provided details of the incident during a press briefing on recent police operations. He explained that tensions escalated when members of a faction protested against their dominant rivals, alleging obstruction of access to a local motor park.
"The protest, which took place on July 20, was sparked by claims that the dominant faction barred our vehicles from entering the garage," Gotan stated. "Unfortunately, the situation devolved into clashes among the factions."
As the day progressed, armed individuals reportedly invaded the Oke-Ijetu area, prompting police intervention. "At approximately 5:30 PM, we received alarming reports of gunfire in the Oke-Ijetu area," added Gotan. "Our Anti-Robbery and Violent Crime Response Unit swiftly responded."
Upon arrival, police faced gunfire from suspected members of a faction led by one Wakili Alowonle. In the ensuing exchange, three police operatives sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.
One suspect, identified as 40-year-old Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi, was arrested during the confrontation. He reportedly confessed to receiving instructions from Alowonle and was found in possession of a pump-action shotgun.
"Saheed admitted that he was acting on a call from Alowonle to gather at Oke-Ijetu," Gotan explained, noting that police recovered six expended cartridges, four vehicles, four motorcycles, military camouflage, and suspected criminal charms from the scene.
In addition to the NURTW incidents, police also arrested three suspected motorcycle thieves in connection with a stolen Bajaj motorcycle traced to Modakeke, leading to the apprehension of Kamarudeen Babatunde, Lekan Usman, and their receiver Moses Oyebade.
"The motorcycle was reported stolen on July 19 and was successfully recovered based on our investigative efforts," Gotan said, confirming that all suspects are now in custody for further questioning.
Furthermore, two individuals suspected of political thuggery were arrested earlier this month in the Amadia area of Osogbo following reports of public disturbances. Alawode Ridwan, 26, and Ajibade Ahmed, 33, are currently being held for investigation.
Commissioner Gotan assured the community that all suspects will face prosecution following the completion of investigations. He urged citizens to assist law enforcement by providing timely and credible information to prevent crime.
"Public cooperation is essential for maintaining safety," he emphasized, encouraging vigilance in reporting suspicious activities to the police.
As the situation continues to unfold, the Osun State Police Command remains committed to restoring order and ensuring the safety of residents in the region.
