Sowore Pledges to Reverse Tinubu Highway Naming, Other Public Asset Honours if Elected

‎The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has vowed to reverse the naming of highways, public institutions and other national assets after President Bola Tinubu and serving public officials if he wins the 2027 presidential election.

‎Sowore made the declaration on Friday in a statement shared on his official Facebook page while reacting to the Federal Government's decision to rename the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Tinubu.

‎

‎According to him, national infrastructure and public assets should not be permanently named after political office holders whose administrations remain subjects of public debate.

‎

‎He stated that an AAC-led government would immediately review and reverse such decisions, describing them as inappropriate under his proposed administration.

‎

‎The former presidential candidate argued that public assets belong to all Nigerians and should not be used to celebrate serving government officials.

‎

‎His reaction followed Thursday's announcement by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would henceforth be known as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.

‎Umahi explained that the decision was approved by the Ministry of Works after consultations with its leadership, saying the project reflected a vision Tinubu conceived during his tenure as governor of Lagos State more than two decades ago.

‎The minister maintained that the President deserved the recognition for turning the long-conceived coastal road project into reality, adding that the administration had also approved the expansion of the Fourth Legacy Highway from 700 kilometres to 1,100 kilometres, alongside other major road projects.

‎Sowore, however, insisted that if elected president in 2027, his administration would overturn the renaming and review similar honours granted to public officials.

‎

‎The AAC candidate also reiterated his commitment to sweeping institutional reforms, recalling his earlier proposal to abolish the current Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admission system and replace the National Youth Service Corps with a voluntary National Job Corps focused on employment and skills development.

‎

‎The Federal Government has yet to respond to Sowore's latest remarks, while discussions over the naming of public infrastructure after political leaders continue to generate mixed reactions across the country.
