Sanwo-Olu’s Wife Advocates for Daily Sanitation in Lagos

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of Lagos State Governor, has called on residents to adopt daily sanitation practices to mitigate flooding and prevent disease outbreaks. Her remarks were made during a community engagement in Eputu London, Ibeju-Lekki, as part of the state’s monthly sanitation exercise.

Highlighting the critical link between waste management and public health, Sanwo-Olu emphasized, “This cleanliness should be a daily exercise and not just during sanitation days. If we all refrain from discarding waste in drainages, we can significantly reduce flooding and health risks.” She urged residents to engage the services of refuse collectors for proper waste disposal.

Sanwo-Olu expressed pride in the growing community involvement in sanitation efforts, noting that families, including children, have increasingly participated in cleaning activities ahead of the scheduled monthly exercise. “Their proactive engagement demonstrates our people’s awareness and commitment to environmental health,” she remarked.

Despite ongoing flooding challenges, residents’ efforts to clear debris were commended. “It’s a work in progress, and we believe these issues can be resolved,” she added, announcing plans to include schoolchildren in future sanitation efforts to foster a sense of environmental responsibility.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, outlined the government’s plans to enhance waste management through the construction of facilities aimed at improving waste evacuation. “Our goal is to establish material recovery facilities that will facilitate better waste management across the state,” Wahab stated.

He further called on residents to take ownership of their waste disposal, urging them to utilize approved collection services instead of resorting to indiscriminate dumping. “Residents who pay for waste collection deserve efficient service,” he insisted, stressing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining a clean environment.

The government aims to sustain environmental compliance through advocacy and public sensitization, coupled with necessary sanctions to ensure adherence among citizens.

This initiative reflects a concerted effort by Lagos State to address growing environmental challenges and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
