Lagos Commissioner Clarifies No Movement Restrictions During Sanitation Exercise

 

The Lagos State Government has officially stated that there are no restrictions on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, addressing recent concerns regarding alleged arrests related to the initiative.

In a statement posted on X, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, clarified that residents are free to go about their daily activities during the sanitation exercise. This response came after a user, Faveo Autos, raised questions about potential penalties for movement during the exercise at the Ikeja Police Station.

Wahab emphasized that any arrests made solely for movement during the sanitation exercise are illegal and do not reflect the policies of the Lagos State Government. “For clarity, there is no restriction on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Consequently, arresting anyone on the basis of movement during the exercise is unlawful,” he stated.

The commissioner elaborated on the purpose of the monthly sanitation initiative, which was reintroduced to foster a culture of environmental cleanliness across Lagos. This program is supported by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

“The initiative aims to restore and strengthen the culture of environmental hygiene,” Wahab noted, adding that the law does not impose any restrictions on movement during the exercise.

Wahab further explained that the government’s approach prioritizes voluntary public participation over punitive measures. “Our focus is on encouraging Lagosians to embrace environmental sanitation as a civic responsibility, fostering a commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos,” he said.

The commissioner’s remarks come in light of growing public concern about enforcement actions during sanitation exercises, which have historically been met with mixed reactions from residents.

While the government aims to promote environmental awareness and participation, the recent confusion over movement restrictions raises questions about public communication strategies regarding such initiatives.

As the monthly sanitation exercise continues, officials are hopeful that clear messaging will encourage more residents to engage actively in maintaining environmental standards without fear of unlawful repercussions.
