Sanwo-Olu Empowers 98 Communities with Land Allocation Letters in Landmark Development Initiative

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has taken a significant step towards inclusive urban development by presenting land allocation letters to 98 communities within the Ito-Omu New Town project area. This initiative aims to secure the rights of indigenous communities and integrate them into the state’s long-term growth plan.

At the presentation ceremony, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of recognizing established communities as partners in the transformation of Lagos. “As Lagos grows, these communities must be included in our development agenda,” he stated.

The governor highlighted the historical contributions of these communities to the state's economy through farming, fishing, and trading. He noted that consultations began in 2020 with traditional leaders and stakeholders to create a comprehensive development plan.

“The future of Lagos must be built on careful planning and secure communities,” Sanwo-Olu remarked, stressing the need for infrastructure that supports sustainable growth. The Ito-Omu New Town Development Plan is designed to blend residential, commercial, and industrial land uses, making it attractive for investment and improving residents' quality of life.

According to the governor, this initiative aligns with his administration’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which focuses on building a resilient and competitive Lagos. “Growth is not just about construction; it’s about how well we plan and how many people we involve,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu assured beneficiaries that the land allocation letters signify their essential role in the state's future. “Your communities will not be overlooked as development unfolds,” he promised.

He also pledged continued government support in providing critical infrastructure like roads and bridges, which are vital for attracting investment and enhancing living standards. The governor urged beneficiaries to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure orderly development and advised against speculative land transactions.

Kamar Olowosago, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Lands Bureau, reiterated that the presentation fulfilled a promise made to the communities in 2020. He shared that over N3.1 billion has been approved in compensation for those affected by the project.

“This milestone shows our commitment to making indigenous communities key stakeholders in this transformational project,” Olowosago stated. He described the allocation letters as the beginning of the Ito-Omu New Town project's implementation phase.

The governor's commitment to inclusive development reflects a broader vision for Lagos, where all communities can thrive amidst the city’s rapid urbanization. As the initiative progresses, the focus will remain on protecting community interests while fostering sustainable growth for future generations.
