In a statement made on Tuesday in Benin City, NDLEA Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju reported the discovery of the illicit drugs, leading to the arrest of two suspects: 45-year-old Ojore Onweze and 30-year-old George Agwumede.
The operation resulted in the confiscation of 1,273kg of skunk cannabis along with 86kg of cannabis seeds, bringing the total weight to 1,359kg. The drugs were stored in 52 large bags and three gallons of cannabis seeds.
Commander Ofoyeju expressed deep concern regarding the utilization of residential properties for the storage of narcotics, labeling it a significant threat to community safety. He emphasized that such practices must be confronted by residents and authorities alike.
“This raid illustrates our unwavering commitment to dismantling networks that threaten our collective peace and safety,” Ofoyeju stated. He highlighted the substantial quantity of drugs seized as a major operational success for the NDLEA.
The commander disclosed that investigations into the drug operation are ongoing, with efforts directed toward uncovering any potential accomplices. He also noted the importance of community involvement in combating drug trafficking and abuse.
“This fight against drug trafficking is not solely the responsibility of the NDLEA; it requires a collective effort from all citizens,” Ofoyeju remarked. He extended gratitude to the Nigerian Army for their collaboration in the operation, urging communities to actively participate in the campaign against drug abuse.
Ofoyeju reiterated the NDLEA's determination to rid Edo State of illegal substances, pledging that those involved in trafficking and distribution will be brought to justice. He called for a united front to ensure a safer and healthier environment for future generations.
