Nigeria's Public Service: A Call for Reform and Investment

 Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to invest in public service reforms, addressing the critical challenges of technological advancement and evolving citizen expectations. Speaking at the opening of the 48th Meeting of the National Council on Establishments, Fubara outlined the necessity for a public service that is not only responsive but also anticipatory of change.

The event, attended by key figures including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, brought together heads of service from across Nigeria's states and the Federal Capital Territory. Fubara argued that a capable and efficient public service is fundamental to realizing sustainable development goals.

"Public institutions must not merely adapt to change; they must lead it," Fubara stated, highlighting that policies should reward innovation, integrity, and outstanding performance. He described the public service as the "engine room of government," essential for implementing policies and delivering vital services to citizens.

Emphasizing the link between a competent public service and effective governance, Fubara noted that the quality of a government is ultimately reflected in its civil service. He urged participants to approach discussions with a vision and commitment to national progress, aiming to produce actionable recommendations that enhance institutional capacity and transparency.

Under Fubara’s leadership, Rivers State has prioritized investments in the welfare and professional development of its public servants. He highlighted initiatives such as exceeding the national minimum wage and ensuring timely payment of salaries and benefits. Moreover, ongoing renovations of the State Secretariat Complex aim to create a modern and conducive working environment for public servants.

"The strength of our public service is crucial for economic growth and public confidence," he asserted. Fubara commended Mrs. Walson-Jack for her transformative leadership in the Federal Civil Service, which he believes sets new standards for public administration in Nigeria.

He expressed hope that the outcomes of the 48th meeting would significantly influence the direction of public service administration, leading to enhanced governance and improved career management systems across the nation.
