Nigerian Army Expansion: President Tinubu Approves Addition of 4 Divisions and 28,000 Personnel

In a decisive move to bolster national security, President Bola Tinubu has authorized the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions. This strategic enhancement includes the recruitment of 28,000 new personnel, aimed at improving the military's operational effectiveness amid evolving security challenges facing the nation.

The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasizing the administration's commitment to fortifying Nigeria’s defense capabilities. The initiative is part of a broader military investment plan that includes upgrading military equipment and improving troop welfare.

"The expansion reflects the President’s dedication to equipping our Armed Forces to effectively tackle emerging security threats and enhance national defense," Onanuga stated in a press release.

The newly established divisions will be strategically located in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City, allowing for improved military coordination and quicker response times to security incidents. This restructuring aims to decentralize operational decision-making, enhance border security, and bolster internal security operations.

The implementation of this restructuring will occur in two phases. The first phase, which includes the establishment of the 5th, 9th, and 10th Divisions, is expected to be completed by September 2026. The second phase will focus on the formation of the 83rd Division and further reorganizations, slated for completion by December 2026.

Under this new structure, each division will be responsible for specific geographical areas, ensuring that military resources are optimized across the country. For instance, the 1st Division will be headquartered in Kaduna, covering northern states such as Kano and Katsina, while the 6th Division will be based in Port Harcourt, responsible for the southern states of Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

President Tinubu commended the leadership of the Nigerian Army, particularly Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, for their dedication and service to the nation. He reiterated his administration's commitment to ensuring that the Armed Forces are well-equipped and motivated to safeguard the security of all Nigerians.

This military expansion comes at a critical time as Nigeria faces various security threats, including insurgency and banditry. The government’s proactive measures aim to enhance the Army’s capacity to respond effectively to these challenges, ensuring a safer environment for all citizens. 

As the nation anticipates these changes, the administration remains focused on creating a well-resourced and capable military force to defend Nigeria against its security threats.
