The Organising Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has died after sustaining gunshot injuries in an attack by unidentified gunmen.
Ajiboye was reportedly attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi. The assailants allegedly intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Images circulating online after the incident showed the victim's white vehicle riddled with bullet holes, particularly on the windscreen and other sections of the car.
Although initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle survived the attack with injuries, subsequent information confirmed that the union official later died while receiving treatment.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW Council, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described the late Ajiboye as a dedicated union leader, loyal associate and dependable friend.
In a condolence message shared on his Facebook page, Adekunle said the deceased's commitment to the union and unwavering support for its activities would be greatly missed.
He also extended his condolences to Ajiboye's family, friends and members of the NURTW, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and the strength for those he left behind.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to announce the arrest of any suspect or disclose the motive behind the attack.
