Kwankwaso, speaking on News Central’s "60 Minutes with Mr. Kay," addressed concerns surrounding Obi's commitment to a single four-year tenure and the possibility of him seeking re-election thereafter. He emphasized that Obi’s public declaration of this pledge should inspire trust among the electorate.
“Peter Obi is a gentleman, and I have every reason to believe he will keep his word. This is a promise made openly, and there should be no doubt about it,” Kwankwaso asserted.
He elaborated on the power-sharing arrangement within the NDC, stating that it is anchored in mutual trust and collective agreement among coalition partners. Kwankwaso underscored the importance of allowing the southern region of Nigeria to complete an eight-year tenure, which he argued aligns with the consensus among alliance members.
“The southern part of the country completing its second term is crucial. I don’t believe any gentleman would want to go back on such a significant commitment,” he remarked.
Kwankwaso further highlighted that the coalition has devised a comprehensive roadmap for governance, which will guide the administration, regardless of who takes the presidency. He underscored that the NDC’s focus is on implementing a collective agenda rather than advancing individual ambitions.
“Our plan encompasses short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies for Nigeria. It is not about individual political bloc interests, but about what is best for the nation,” he stated.
He reiterated that continuity in governance and policy execution would remain a priority, ensuring that whoever leads the country adheres to the agreed-upon agenda.
“The agenda we have collectively developed must be upheld by whoever assumes the presidency, be it Peter, myself, or another leader,” Kwankwaso concluded.
As the political landscape heats up ahead of the 2027 election, the NDC is positioning itself as a united front, advocating for trust and accountability in leadership.
