Leading a delegation that included National Commissioners and senior aides, Amupitan lauded Abubakar as a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey, citing his role in the transition to civilian rule in 1999 as a significant milestone. He referred to the former leader not only as a statesman but also as a vital supporter of INEC’s mission.
"The Peace Accord initiative, led by General Abubakar, has significantly influenced Nigeria's political landscape by promoting non-violence among political actors," Amupitan stated, highlighting the initiative’s role in reinforcing the will of the Nigerian populace.
During the visit, described by Amupitan as a "pilgrimage of appreciation," he extended his congratulations to Abubakar on his recent 84th birthday, recognizing his contributions to fostering democratic stability and peaceful coexistence in the country.
Despite the challenges facing the commission, Amupitan assured Nigerians that INEC remains steadfast in its resolve to reflect the electorate's will in election outcomes. "Our goal is to empower ordinary Nigerians to vote confidently, knowing their votes will be counted," he affirmed.
Amupitan also officially announced the election dates, confirming that the Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, followed by the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027.
In response, General Abubakar called on all Nigerians to rally behind INEC to ensure a smooth electoral process in 2027. His appeal underscores the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding the integrity of the nation's democratic practices.
