INEC Assures Smooth Logistics for Osun Governorship Election Despite NURTW Crises

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured citizens that ongoing internal disputes within the Osun State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) will not disrupt logistics for the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

At a recent town hall meeting in Osogbo, Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, emphasized the crucial role of transportation in ensuring a successful electoral process. "Transportation is a critical aspect of election logistics; without it, no election can succeed," Babalola stated, highlighting the importance of reliable transport for moving personnel and materials to polling units.

Babalola clarified that INEC is communicating directly with the national leadership of NURTW, rather than engaging with any state-level factions. "We are dealing with a specific body that has assured us of their commitment to provide vehicles in good condition," she explained. The REC expressed confidence that any internal issues within the union would not impact the election logistics.

During the meeting, attended by representatives from civil society organizations, security agencies, and traditional institutions, local monarchs urged voters to prioritize integrity over financial inducements. Oba Moses Agunsoye, the Elegboro of Ijebu-Jesa, and Oba AbdulAzeez Olatunbosun, the Akire of Ikire-Ile, emphasized the need for peaceful conduct during the electoral process and warned against violence.

In light of reports predicting Ijesaland as a potential hotspot for electoral unrest, Oba Agunsoye noted that traditional leaders had convened discussions with local politicians to discourage any form of violence. Both monarchs called for a focus on constructive dialogue and a contest of ideas rather than aggression.

Security operatives and electoral officials were similarly urged to maintain neutrality and resist any attempts at compromise that could undermine the electoral integrity. 

The upcoming governorship election in Osun will see candidates from 14 political parties, including the ruling Accord party and the All Progressives Congress (APC), vying for office. As the electoral date approaches, INEC remains committed to ensuring a smooth process, highlighting that logistics and security are paramount for a successful election.

With the stakes high and the eyes of the nation watching, the emphasis on peaceful participation and electoral integrity is more critical than ever as Osun prepares to cast its votes.
