Governor Abiodun Orders Investigation into Ajuwon Building Collapse

Governor Dapo Abiodun has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the collapse of a two-storey building on Baale Road in Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area, following a tragic incident that resulted in one fatality. The Ogun State Government is committed to safeguarding lives and preventing similar occurrences throughout the state.

The building collapsed Monday afternoon during a severe thunderstorm, which was accompanied by heavy rainfall and reported lightning strikes. Preliminary findings from a multi-agency investigation team indicated a catastrophic structural failure, leading to the sinking of the lower floors and leaving parts of the upper slab exposed.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the collapse occurred around 3:00 p.m. Just before the incident, two women and their children managed to evacuate upon noticing signs of distress in the structure. A young man sustained minor injuries while escaping just before the building gave way.

Emergency responders, including officials from the Ogun State Safety Office, State Fire Service, and various ministries, promptly mobilized to the scene to conduct coordinated search-and-rescue operations. Contractors in the Akute-Alagbole and Agbado areas also provided heavy equipment within minutes to aid in the rescue efforts.

Initial surface searches did not uncover any victims; however, traces of blood and footprints under the rubble prompted a controlled excavation. This effort ultimately led to the recovery of one deceased individual, whose identity remains unconfirmed as of this report.

While adverse weather conditions were noted prior to the collapse, the exact cause of the structural failure has yet to be determined. Experts suggest that thorough structural, geotechnical, and forensic investigations are necessary to assess potential factors such as foundation failure, soil instability, construction defects, or the use of substandard materials.

In response, Governor Abiodun has directed specialists from various state agencies to conduct detailed assessments of the collapsed structure, evaluate soil conditions, examine construction materials, and inspect adjacent buildings for potential compromise.

The Governor expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as sympathies to all affected individuals. He praised the efforts of emergency responders, volunteers, and community members for their swift actions, which played a crucial role in minimizing further loss of life.

Governor Abiodun assured residents that the state government would provide necessary support to those impacted by the collapse, emphasizing that anyone found violating building regulations or deviating from approved plans would face legal consequences.

He also expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its assistance during the emergency response, highlighting the strong partnership between the two states in promoting safety and protecting lives.

Reaffirming the government's commitment to enforcing building regulations, Abiodun urged property developers, builders, and residents to secure all necessary approvals before commencing construction and to comply strictly with approved plans and specifications issued by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

The government underscored the importance of adhering to established construction standards, warning that unauthorized alterations, the use of substandard materials, and non-compliance with regulations pose significant risks to public safety. 

It reiterated that strict compliance with building regulations is the most effective measure to prevent avoidable structural failures and safeguard lives and property in Ogun State.
