The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma, disclosed this after receiving a proposal from a Chinese construction delegation seeking collaboration with the government to develop affordable housing nationwide.
According to a statement issued by the ministry's Director of Press and Public Relations, Badamasi Haiba, the proposal aligns with the Federal Government's drive to expand access to decent and affordable housing through strategic partnerships with the private sector.
Darma said the ministry is prepared to allocate land in the Federal Capital Territory, states, and local government areas, provided investors comply with all legal and statutory requirements.
He noted that the initiative supports the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, a flagship intervention designed to reduce Nigeria's housing deficit and improve home ownership.
Our goal is to make decent and affordable housing accessible to more Nigerians. We are ready to support genuine investors by facilitating access to land and providing the necessary institutional backing for successful project execution," the minister said.
Leading the delegation, Chief Engineer Lewis Chima said Nigeria's estimated housing deficit of about 17 million units presents an opportunity for meaningful investment.
He explained that the proposed project would complement the Federal Government's housing agenda by delivering affordable homes through modern prefabricated construction technology.
According to him, the company intends to deploy an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Financing (EPCF) model capable of delivering 10,000 housing units within 30 months, while reducing construction costs, improving quality, and accelerating project completion.
Chima added that the project would also create employment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer, and contribute to sustainable urban development across Nigeria.
Following the presentation, Darma directed relevant officials within the ministry to constitute a committee that will evaluate the proposal and advise on the next steps.
Also speaking, the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening partnerships that will accelerate the delivery of affordable, quality housing under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Nigeria's housing deficit is estimated at approximately 17 million units. To address the challenge, the Federal Government is implementing the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which includes the development of Renewed Hope Cities, Estates, and Social Housing Estates through public-private partnerships.
Construction is currently ongoing on more than 10,000 housing units across 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory, including major projects in Abuja, Lagos, and Kano.
