Prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia South Senatorial District have declared their support for the party's senatorial candidate, Prince Paul Ikonne, describing him as the right choice to represent the district in the National Assembly.
The endorsement was announced in a statement presented on Tuesday by Elder Chinwe Nwanganga on behalf of party stakeholders across the district.
The APC leaders also applauded President Bola Tinubu and the party's National Working Committee (NWC) for what they described as a transparent and credible primary election process that produced the party's candidates.
According to the group, the party primaries that produced Ikonne as the APC candidate for Abia South Senatorial District and Sam Nwogu for the Ukwa Federal Constituency reflected the genuine wishes of party members.
The stakeholders said Ikonne's emergence was based on his long-standing record of public service and leadership, noting that his experience positions him to provide effective representation at the Senate.
They commended the APC leadership for promoting internal democracy and listening to calls for fairness and equity during the party's candidate selection process.
The statement further noted that Obingwa Local Government Area had occupied the Abia South Senate seat for about 20 of the 28 years since the return to democratic rule, stressing the need for broader political inclusion within the district.
The party leaders also acknowledged President Tinubu's appointment of former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, as Nigeria's Ambassador to Spain, describing it as a significant recognition for the people of Abia South.
Highlighting Ikonne's credentials, the stakeholders recalled his tenure as Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) between 2020 and 2025, saying his administrative and developmental experience would be an asset in the Senate.
They expressed confidence that, if elected, Ikonne would champion policies that promote development and improve representation for the people of Abia South.
The group concluded by pledging its support for all APC candidates in the forthcoming elections, including President Bola Tinubu, the party's governorship candidate, Chief Eric Opah, Prince Paul Ikonne, and other candidates seeking seats in the National Assembly and Abia State House of Assembly.
