The dissenting lawmakers, led by Hon. Olawunmi Fayemi-Obayelu of Ilaje Constituency II, claim the Speaker has lost the confidence of the majority. Fayemi-Obayelu stated that three additional lawmakers have joined the initial 21 who supported the impeachment, solidifying the push for Oladiji’s ouster.
“We have refrained from public statements due to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s call for reconciliation, but that peace window expires on Sunday. We remain resolute in our pursuit of the Speaker’s removal,” she asserted.
Further accusations have emerged against Oladiji, including issuing House resolutions without member approval and mishandling the distribution of electricity meters under the O’Datiwa Meter Distribution Programme.
In a bid to quell the unrest, Oladiji has firmly denied any wrongdoing, labeling the impeachment efforts as politically motivated—a diversion stemming from discontent among some lawmakers over their failure to secure re-election tickets and his leadership in the Assembly.
“Some members are unhappy because they didn’t get the tickets they desired, and they’re using this as a political tool against me,” he argued.
Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Olatunji Fabiyi, has rejected Oladiji’s claims, emphasizing that the impeachment is rooted in issues of governance and accountability. He accused the Speaker of breaching legislative procedures regarding the OSOPADEC budget.
Despite interventions from Governor Aiyedatiwa and APC leaders aimed at resolving the crisis, the aggrieved lawmakers remain steadfast in their belief that they can no longer trust the Speaker’s leadership.
This ongoing turmoil threatens to overshadow the legislative agenda in Ondo State as the lawmakers stand united in their demands, raising questions about the stability of governance in the region.
