Accord Party Alleges Police Intimidation Ahead of Osun Governorship Election, Calls for Action

The Accord Party has taken a stand against what it claims are widespread police harassment and arrests of its members in the lead-up to the August 15 governorship election in Osun State. 

In a petition directed at President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the party accused law enforcement of political bias and undermining democratic processes. 

National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem reported that approximately 100 of its leaders and supporters have been detained, some allegedly moved to Abuja, raising concerns about the integrity of the upcoming poll. The party's previous complaints about attacks on its campaign activities were reportedly ignored, prompting a renewed demand for the removal of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.

Mgbudem condemned the targeted actions against party officials and urged supporters to remain peaceful, calling for intervention from national and international stakeholders to ensure a fair electoral environment. As political tensions rise, the Accord Party emphasizes the importance of voter participation, stating that "the ballot is stronger than the bullet."
