In his Independence Day address, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged Nigerians to shift focus towards increased production, agricultural expansion, and the establishment of globally competitive businesses. He emphasized that the nation is transitioning from economic reforms to a new era of prosperity.
Tinubu outlined his administration's commitment to fostering an economy driven by production, enterprise, and industrial growth. “I want to see more Nigerians making things and farms supplying our cities,” he stated, highlighting the potential of local businesses to compete in international markets.
The President underscored the significance of Nigeria's youthful population, calling it a vital economic asset. He stressed that harnessing the energy and talent of young Nigerians is crucial for transforming ambition into productive activities.
“Prosperity requires more than cheaper goods; it requires productive work,” Tinubu declared, placing job creation and industrial growth at the forefront of his policy agenda.
He detailed plans to utilize Nigeria’s gas resources to power new industries, support factory revivals, and enhance digital connectivity. Infrastructure improvements, financing, and skill development were also highlighted as key components of his economic strategy.
Tinubu's broader aim is to reduce the cost of living by lowering production and transportation expenses. He described ongoing initiatives to expand mechanized irrigation, improve access to seeds and fertilizers, and invest in transportation networks connecting farms to markets.
The President reported positive economic indicators, including a growth rate exceeding four percent this year, improved oil sector performance, and a notable decrease in inflation.
“We are now moving from emergency treatment to shared and widespread prosperity,” he stated, emphasizing that prosperity should translate into tangible benefits for everyday Nigerians—such as reliable electricity, better education, and accessible healthcare.
Acknowledging the ongoing struggles many citizens face, Tinubu recognized that these issues stem from decades of low productivity and inadequate infrastructure. He expressed his commitment to changing the course of Nigeria’s economic future.
Tinubu pledged to strengthen direct support for vulnerable households and enhance programs like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. “Our objective is not to manage poverty more efficiently; we will defeat it,” he declared.
As he concluded, Tinubu emphasized the need for sustained economic growth and discipline to create millions of productive opportunities across the nation. “The age of reform has done its work. Now begins the age of prosperity,” he affirmed.
