Oyo State Enforces Grazing Law: 20 Cows Seized for Crop Destruction

In a decisive move to uphold agricultural integrity, the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) has impounded 20 cows in Ibadan over allegations of open grazing and crop destruction. This enforcement action comes as part of the state's commitment to the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law of 2019.

On September 30, OYRLEA, in collaboration with security operatives, conducted an operation at Batake Village along the Ibadan-Eruwa Road.

The action was prompted by a petition from Adewolu Farms, which reported ongoing damage to its cassava, maize, yam, and cashew crops due to cattle invasion. Despite attempts by herders to relocate the animals, officials managed to seize nine cows during this first operation.

The following day, another operation at Idi-Iroko, Moniya, resulted in the confiscation of 11 additional cows for similar violations, bringing the total to 20.

Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd.), the OYRLEA Chairperson, emphasized the importance of enforcing these regulations to safeguard farmers and their livelihoods.

OYRLEA has urged residents to report any suspected violations of the grazing law through designated channels.

Justice Aderemi reassured the public that all legitimate complaints would be addressed in accordance with the law, solidifying the agency’s dedication to protecting both agricultural activities and community welfare.

The authority's proactive measures reflect a growing determination to mitigate conflicts between herders and farmers, promoting peaceful coexistence while ensuring agricultural productivity in the region.

The public’s cooperation is deemed essential in this ongoing effort to enforce the law effectively.
