The event, themed “Restitution, Rehabilitation and Safer Edo State,” took place at the Sir Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub. Governor Okpebholo praised the participants for their courageous decision to abandon cultism, stating that it would not only save their lives but also protect their families from further anguish.
“Those who refuse to change will face the full force of the law,” he asserted, urging remaining cult members to reconsider their choices. He confirmed that the government would take drastic measures, including demolishing properties linked to cult activities.
The governor reported a drastic decrease in cult-related killings, which had exceeded 300 annually when he took office. “Our efforts have brought this number down to almost zero,” he noted, attributing the change to stricter laws and enhanced security measures.
In addition to tackling cultism, Okpebholo highlighted a reduction in kidnapping incidents throughout the state. He described cultism as a catalyst for other violent crimes and urged individuals to resist peer pressure and intimidation.
The governor reassured attendees that his administration is committed to providing opportunities for rehabilitation to those ready to turn their lives around. “Your past does not define your future,” he stated, encouraging the participants to embrace this new beginning.
Noah Idemudia, coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad, commended the governor’s dedication to fighting cultism and kidnapping, praising the collaborative efforts with security agencies.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, emphasized the program's intent to save young lives and foster productive citizenship among former cult members. “Cultism leads to death; choose life instead,” he urged the attendees.
Political figure Francis Inegbeneki echoed the governor’s sentiments, urging a similar focus on drug abuse, which he linked to cult activities. He called for a comprehensive approach to address this interconnected issue.
Edo State Attorney-General Roland Otaru noted that cult-related activities have devastated lives across the state. He encouraged former cult members to seize the opportunity presented by the renunciation initiative and become law-abiding citizens.
As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere was filled with hope and determination, showcasing a community’s resolve to break free from the chains of cultism and build a safer, more productive future for all.
