The event, held at the Igbo-Efon Primary Health Centre along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, featured remarks from Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, the Permanent Secretary of Health District III. She emphasized the importance of nutrition during pregnancy, stating, “What a mother eats directly affects the well-being and growth of the unborn child.”
Dr. Adeleke described the initiative as a vital nutrition boost, highlighting that proper nutrition can prevent anemia, ensure healthy birth weight, minimize complications during delivery, and lay a solid foundation for the child’s future, especially in challenging economic times.
She urged the expectant mothers to attend antenatal clinics regularly, adhere to prescribed medications, maintain balanced diets, rest adequately, and report any concerning symptoms promptly. “Ensure delivery in health facilities under skilled birth attendants,” she added.
Representing the Special Adviser on Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement, Dr. Omotayo Babatunde noted that Maternal and Child Health is crucial for human capital development. He stressed that healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, adequate nutrition, immunization, and postnatal care are essential for building a healthier society.
Dr. Babatunde assured the beneficiaries of the State Government's commitment to their well-being and encouraged them to complement the food support with regular antenatal care, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely immunizations at local Primary Health Centres.
Mrs. Victoria Akinwolemiwa, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude to the State Government for the gesture. She assured that the expectant mothers in the community would follow the advice of health workers diligently.
This initiative reflects the government's ongoing efforts to improve maternal health and ensure that mothers and their children receive the necessary support during crucial developmental stages.
As the program continues, the focus remains on fostering a healthier future for families across Lagos State.
