Okpebholo attributed this significant reduction to stronger laws, enhanced security operations, and improved intelligence gathering. He emphasized that a zero-tolerance policy towards cultism has been implemented, warning that his administration would not spare those who refuse to renounce their affiliations with cult groups.
“Before my administration, Edo recorded more than 300 cult-related killings annually, but through our concerted efforts, this figure has dropped to almost zero,” he stated. The governor also highlighted a decline in kidnapping incidents as a result of intensified security measures.
He identified cultism as a root cause of broader criminal activities, including kidnapping and armed robbery, and reiterated that the government is committed to dismantling these criminal networks. Okpebholo praised the youths who publicly renounced their cult affiliations, calling it a positive step towards saving their lives and communities.
The governor did not shy away from issuing stern warnings to remaining cult members, stating, “If caught, there will be no mercy.” He emphasized that his administration would demolish any properties associated with cult activities.
In an effort to provide alternatives for young people, Okpebholo affirmed that his government offers rehabilitation opportunities for those willing to abandon a life of crime. He urged those still involved in cultism to seize this chance and not be swayed by fear or peer pressure.
The governor underscored his dedication to protecting the lives of Edo residents, asserting that no one would be above the law, regardless of personal connections. “Even if my child is involved, the right thing must be done,” he asserted.
Support for the governor's initiatives came from the coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, who lauded the establishment of the squad and its collaboration with security agencies. The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, also commended Okpebholo's efforts against cultism.
The event drew political support, with figures like Francis Inegbeneki praising the governor for his progress in combating cultism, while also urging him to tackle the issue of drug abuse linked to these activities.
Edo State's Attorney-General, Roland Otaru, reiterated that the government's focus on dismantling cultism reflects a commitment to restoring peace and safety across the region. The overall sentiment at the event was one of hope and renewed commitment to a safer, more lawful Edo State.
