Sanwo-Olu highlighted the recent Osun governorship election, which saw Governor Ademola Adeleke defeat the APC candidate by over 60,000 votes, as evidence of Tinubu’s dedication to democratic principles. This outcome, he noted, illustrates that political power can change hands legitimately through the ballot.
“There was a time in this country when ‘federal might’ was a phrase used without irony,” Sanwo-Olu remarked, affirming that Tinubu’s governance reflects a commitment to genuine democratic processes.
The governor asserted that Tinubu aims to leave behind a legacy of democracy that serves as an example for the rest of Africa. “This President is a lifelong democrat, and he means to leave behind a stronger democracy than he inherited,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu also commended electoral reforms and the integration of technology but stressed the importance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) being fully prepared for the upcoming 2027 elections.
He urged politicians to avoid violence and electoral malpractice, emphasizing that no political ambition justifies the loss of life. “A mandate is only as strong as the process that produced it,” he warned.
The governor called for accountability from both political leaders and the media, advocating for a rigorous press that challenges misinformation. “I am asking for a rigorous press. Check the facts, mine included,” he said.
He cautioned that misinformation from anonymous sources and doctored content could pose significant threats ahead of the elections, urging the media to combat these challenges effectively.
Sanwo-Olu concluded by reiterating the need for a fair and transparent electoral process, encouraging voters to evaluate leaders based on their performance and integrity.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, Sanwo-Olu's remarks underscore the importance of a vibrant democracy and the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to uphold its values.
