Oyo Governor Makinde Extends Wage Award and Transport Subsidy Amid Economic Pressures

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced the renewal of the wage award for civil servants for an additional three months, along with the continuation of the transport subsidy in response to rising economic challenges.

During his return from annual leave, Makinde made the announcement with the aim of alleviating the economic burden faced by residents due to recent increases in fuel prices. He expressed gratitude to the state's workers for their dedication and support.

“I want to assure you that the wage award will be renewed for another three months. We will also continue with the transport subsidy,” he stated, addressing a gathering that included the Acting Governor, Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, labor leaders, and civil servants.

The governor acknowledged the impact of federal policies on the state’s economy and emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogues with labor leaders. He also pointed out the significant increase in the state's wage bill, which has surged from N4.5 billion in 2019 to N18 billion monthly.

Makinde highlighted how the minimum wage has escalated from N18,000 to N80,000, reflecting the administration’s commitment to workers' welfare. He commended Acting Governor Lawal for efficiently managing state affairs during his absence.

In a broader political context, Makinde called on President Bola Tinubu to adhere to constitutional norms by delegating authority to the Vice-President during his own leaves, a practice he has consistently followed.

“They should not be afraid to hand over,” he remarked, asserting the importance of constitutional governance. 

The governor also addressed allegations from the opposition regarding a €55 million French loan, stating that the funds were strictly for healthcare improvement, not for his presidential campaign.

He reassured residents that the loan process began in 2020 and was aimed at enhancing health facilities across the state. “This loan was granted because of the positive reputation Oyo State has built,” he said.

As the state approaches upcoming elections, Makinde urged residents to make informed decisions, emphasizing the vital role of governance in shaping their future.

He also thanked civil servants for their cooperation and support during his absence, underscoring the importance of teamwork in governance. 

The event showcased a united front among government officials, labor leaders, and civil servants, reflecting a commitment to progress in Oyo State despite economic challenges.
