The announcement was made during the launch of the South-South zonal phase of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Calabar. Tinubu stated that President Bola Tinubu approved N25 million for each affected business owner, totaling N450 million.
“Mr. President extends his deepest sympathies to the people of Cross River for this unfortunate incident that has disrupted many livelihoods,” she said. “This intervention aims to provide immediate assistance and help victims recover from their losses.”
In addition to the support for business owners, Tinubu revealed an extra N50 million allocated for women's groups, which was presented to the wife of the Cross River State Governor, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu. She also announced N15 million for women who welcomed her to the state.
The fire at the shopping mall led to significant financial losses for the affected businesses, prompting the need for urgent relief measures. The First Lady emphasized that the relief package is designed to help entrepreneurs bounce back quickly.
Furthermore, she highlighted the food bank initiative as a sustainable solution to food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable households across the South-South region, targeting children under six, pregnant women, and nursing mothers.
“The food bank program is a crucial part of our commitment to addressing hunger and supporting the most vulnerable in our communities,” she added.
This relief effort comes at a critical time as the government aims to provide immediate support and long-term solutions for those affected by the fire.
With the backing of the federal government, the First Lady's initiative seeks not only to assist in recovery but also to empower communities and foster resilience against future adversities.
