General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki cautioned that these practices pose serious safety risks, particularly as users often glide alongside moving vehicles and cross roads without supervision. “The increasing use of rolling skate shoes on roads primarily meant for motorized traffic constitutes a major safety concern,” he stated.
Bakare-Oki emphasized that public highways are unpredictable environments, where the simultaneous movement of vehicles and pedestrians can lead to devastating collisions. He urged parents, guardians, and schools to discourage recreational skating on highways, expressways, and bridges.
“Such activities should be confined to designated recreational areas or private compounds,” he added, stressing that safety equipment like helmets and pads should be used whenever skating.
The LASTMA chief reiterated that road safety is a collective responsibility that requires vigilance and respect for the inherent dangers of public roads. He called on motorists to remain alert, especially in residential areas where children may suddenly enter traffic.
Bakare-Oki also urged the public to report dangerous traffic situations and other incidents requiring immediate attention through LASTMA's toll-free number, 3367.
The warning comes amid rising concerns about pedestrian safety in Lagos, as authorities strive to maintain order on the increasingly congested roads.
As the city continues to grow, LASTMA's message serves as a critical reminder of the need for responsible behavior on public highways to ensure the safety of all road users.
