Lagos First Lady Highlights Progress in Monthly Sanitation as Community Engagement Grows

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has praised the increasing public participation in the city’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, referring to it as a significant step forward. During a recent monitoring visit to Mafoluku in the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, she acknowledged residents' concerns regarding delays in waste collection.

Accompanied by key officials, including the Deputy Governor's wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, and Special Adviser on the Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Dr. Sanwo-Olu urged residents to remain patient as the government implements innovative strategies to enhance waste management.

“The turnaround time for waste trucks can take several days at dumpsites, as they often face long queues,” she explained. “However, we are actively working on new strategies to improve waste disposal and management across the state.”

Addressing the challenges as "teething problems," she expressed optimism that these issues would soon be resolved, ensuring Lagos maintains its reputation as a clean city. She also emphasized the importance of waste separation at the household level, encouraging residents to sort recyclable materials from regular waste.

The initiative to involve school children in the monthly cleanup efforts aims to foster environmental awareness from an early age.

Engr. Akodu echoed the First Lady's sentiments, noting a positive shift in community behavior. “Residents are increasingly taking the initiative to clean their homes and streets, which shows a cultural change in our approach to the environment,” he stated. He urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping and to separate waste from the point of generation.

Meanwhile, Mr. Olabode Agoro, the Head of Service, led a separate team in Lagos Mainland Local Government, reinforcing the call for residents to embrace cleanliness as a daily responsibility. He observed that while participation has improved over the past six months, there remains room for growth.

“We should not wait for government officials to arrive before we start cleaning,” Agoro emphasized, advocating for a culture of continuous environmental care.

He commended the Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Council Development Area for effective advocacy efforts that have boosted community involvement.

Mayor Emilagba Kolawole of Lagos Mainland also praised residents for their commitment, noting that ongoing sensitization efforts are yielding fruitful results.

The monthly sanitation exercise continues to see participation from various stakeholders, including the Body of Permanent Secretaries and students, highlighting a collective effort toward a cleaner Lagos.

As the initiative evolves, the Lagos State Government remains committed to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among its citizens.
