State APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi released a statement condemning their actions as a violation of party loyalty and integrity. He emphasized that their resignations from the APC appear to be a last-ditch effort to evade consequences for their conduct.
“Membership in the APC is not a political garment to be donned for convenience during primaries and discarded afterward,” Ojelabi stated. He reiterated the importance of adhering to party rules and regulations, particularly during the electoral cycle.
Ojelabi further explained that losing an internal contest should lead to acceptance of the outcome or legitimate avenues for redress, not a switch to competing platforms. He cited Article 9(5)(II) of the APC Constitution (amended in 2022) as the basis for the disciplinary action taken against Egunjobi and Yusuf.
The chairman highlighted the critical importance of discipline and loyalty within the party as it prepares for upcoming elections, especially in light of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) emphasis on compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
“Both individuals are no longer members of the APC and have no authority to represent the party in any capacity,” Ojelabi asserted. He urged party members and the public to disregard any dealings with Egunjobi and Yusuf as representatives of the APC.
Ojelabi reaffirmed the party's commitment to internal democracy and maintaining its credibility, stating, “The right to contest an election does not grant the right to undermine the party after losing its nomination.”
As the APC gears up for future elections, the expulsion serves as a warning to other members about the consequences of disloyalty and undermining party unity. The Lagos APC aims to preserve its integrity and discipline, ensuring that its members adhere to the rules governing the organization.
