Kenneth Okonkwo: The Peter Obi I Campaigned For Is No More

Kenneth Okonkwo, the former spokesperson for the Labour Party's presidential campaign, has voiced his disillusionment with Peter Obi, stating that the political figure he once supported is now markedly different.

In a recent interview, Okonkwo explained that his relationship with Obi has soured since their departure from the Labour Party and the subsequent political shifts leading up to the 2027 election.

Reflecting on his previous support for Obi, he emphasized that it was based on the political platform and context at the time. “I campaigned for him as a member of the Labour Party. There was no agreement for me to follow him into any new political landscape,” he said.

Okonkwo's concerns revolve around the evolving political circumstances that have altered his perception of Obi. “The person you’re seeing now is completely different from the person I campaigned for,” he remarked, indicating that new information and developments have changed his assessment.

After serving as the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Obi left the party to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and previously engaged in an opposition coalition with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Now a chieftain and spokesperson for the ADC's presidential campaign, Okonkwo has been vocal in his criticism of Obi’s decision to switch parties and pursue his presidential ambitions with the NDC.

He reiterated that his support was contingent on the principles and agreements of the Labour Party, and he feels no obligation to continue backing Obi in his new political endeavors.

“Just because I supported him before doesn’t mean I have to support him now,” he stressed, highlighting the importance of political consistency in leadership.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Okonkwo's comments reflect a growing sentiment among some supporters who feel disconnected from the leaders they once backed.

With the 2027 elections approaching, Okonkwo's perspectives on Obi could resonate with many who are reassessing their political alliances.
